SUNDAY, 5/19 at 3pm -> With Monday being Memorial Day and most people having the day off, it’s only right that we have an extra special Goodness the day/night before. This edition is extra special indeed, as we import world renowned DJ Mick Boogie (DJ for Jay-Z/Lebron, mixtapes w/Little Brother, Busta Rhymes) from Brooklyn and Prime Element’s own Es Nine to join me in celebrating the legendary Native Tongues crew. Even if you don’t know the crew name, you know the Native Tongues fore-bearers, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Jungle Brother & Queen Latifah, but their affiliations extended to Black Sheep, Monie Love, Leaders Of The New School, Brand Nubian, Common, Chi-Ali, Bush Babees, The Beatnuts, Mos Def & beyond. We’ll be rocking classics, album cuts, b-sides, remixes, guest spots, rarities, original samples and so on from all the members of the crew, all day and into the night on the Meadowlark’s incredible patio.
Then at 10pm, we’re kicking off the first night of the Goodness Film Club with a screening of Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels Of A Tribe Called Quest on the Meadowlark patio’s outdoor screen. For the rest of the Summer, every Sunday we’ll be screening either a music related movie, comedy or something else cool after we wrap up the music at 10pm. Consider it your wind down for the weekend, I know that’s my plan. No Que No Tacos Y Mariscos will be cooking up tacos and on the drink side of things, we’ll have Jessica the Solution Bartender and Tara serving three delicious flavors of agua frescas with Svedka and a whole lot more. 2701 Larimer St/ No Cover / 21+.
SUNDAY, 5/19 at 3pm -> Goodness continues on in grand fashion with another super dope DJ lineup, this time with Denver Nuggets team DJ, DJ Bedz, Los Angeles-bred DJ/producer Spyda T.E.K. and the Bay Area’s Truth Live joining me on the turntables. DJ Bedz spins in front of hundreds of thousands of people every year, but rarely gets to flex his deep crates like this, 2013 Solution Beat Battle Spyda T.E.K. has been working on original remixes & mashups for his set and Truth Live is making a tour stop in Colorado just to rock for us. All three guests should make me step my game up and that should make for another great Sunday of music on the Meadowlark’s incredible patio. No Que No Tacos Y Mariscos will be cooking up food and on the drink side of things, we’ll have Jessica the Solution Bartender and Tara serving three delicious flavors (strawberry, pineapple & watermelon) of agua frescas con Svedka and a whole lot more. 2701 Larimer St/ No Cover / 21+.
FRIDAY, 5/3 -> Don’t miss an extra special edition of The Solution w/DJ Low Key & Lazy Eyez at the Meadowlark(2701 Larimer St) as we team up with TiredPirate & Family Affair for our first limited edition Art Of Records tee (!!!!!), right on time to commemorate the one year passing of rap legend MCA of the Beastie Boys. We’re taking TiredPirate’s fantastic Ill Communication-inspired piece from The Art Of Records, flipping into a fresh t-shirt, then releasing at The Solution while we go heavy on the Beastie Boys to celebrate the life of MCA and the music of the Beastie Boys (plus a lot of the top quality hip hop we normally rock). To make things even better, proceeds from the sale of the tee are going to a Colorado scene fixture, the Denver chapter of national nonprofit Hip Hop Congress.
On top of the tees, Hip Hop Congress will be running a raffle with a ridiculous lineup of prizes to raise money for Summer’s annual Spirit Of Hip Hop Park Jam, including great stuff from the likes of Rawh Brand, Xencs L. Wing, TiredPirate, Joseph Martinez, DJ Matt Cassidy & more, plus of course, a few of our limited Public Microphone tees. We’ll be rocking the best in hip hop & a whole lot more on the turntables, The Cluck Truck will be parked out front with delicious food (check their menu HERE, it look like a perfect compliment to a good beer or post party wrap up meal) and all shall be right in the Denver for the night.
Complimentary photo booth / Beautiful patio / $5 Red Bull & Svedka / 21+ / No cover until 11 / Only $5 after / “Our town’s longest running & most revered hip hop night…A testament to quality” – Westword / More info on the party on Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr
P.S. We have a second colorway to unveil too, gotta love that!!!
Starting FRIDAY, 1/18 from 5-9pm -> Introducing w/DJ Low Key, my recently-launched weekly based around the idea of introducing you to cool new stuff and experiences, through music, people, food, art and a whole lot more, is moving from Wednesday nights to Friday happy hour at the Meadowlark. It just seems right; instead of having to drag yourself out midweek to check out some fun, new stuff, you can stop by after work or before you head on a Friday night for some cheap drinks and whatever randomness I’m bringing in on a given evening. We have some crazy good happy hour specials to get your night of good decisions going too:
Also, we’re bringing in green chili tamales from La Casita every week in case you’re hungry, fresh from work, or need a snack to kick off your evening. With all said, consider Introducing your holdover until things warm back up for Goodness (I’m thinking early May right now, can’t wait for that!!!). The patio is partially enclosed and heated, but the party is based inside the Meadowlark (2701 Larimer St) while it’s colder. So now you know, every Friday evening I’ll be bringing something new and cool to the table, plus spinning a variety of music that will hopefully put you on to some new favorites. Come through, check it out, you’ll be glad you did. 21+ / No cover / 5-9PM.
Denver, meet Neon Brown, one eclectic dude and quite the producer/DJ. I first learned about Neon when he threw a J Dilla tribute at the Beauty Bar last February, but it turns out he’d actually collaborated with both previous Solution Showcase feature Fast Forward and Solution co-founder Sounds Supreme years before we even started The Solution. Since then he’s spent time in New York, where he linked up with Roots affiliate and Money Making Jam Boy Truck North, made his way back to Denver and since has moved out to the Bay Area. In the mean time he managed to drop three projects in 2012 alone; Teenagers, It’s Spring Again & Child’s Play. Check out all three projects on both his bandcamp & soundcloud pages and stay tuned “Riot Act”, the upcoming Neon Brown-produced single from Truck North featuring Homeboy Sandman, and a rumored collab with Donwill (of Tanya Morgan fame). – DJ Low Key
Here’s more on the musical madness that is Neon Brown from his bio:
“Neon Brown is a Musician/ Audio Engineer born and raised in Denver CO. He went to Audio Engineering school in New York and currently resides in Oakland CA. Over the past six years he has been working hard on his career as an Audio Engineer and Producer before then, not so hard working. He has produced for such artists as Mickey Theis and Truck North and plans to keep on with the keepin’ on. Neon has seven children out of wedlock and tends to provide for three of them even though this was not his previous plan. Neon likes sorbet, sunlight, two of his children and pizza. As a child he picked up the guitar and learned to play people. As an adult he has watched his one son to grow up into a funeral and there for will never have children again. As a wise old man he will throw lavish parties full of half naked women and seltzer where talking is optional. Space suits are his past time and when his life is over he hopes to accomplish hoop dreams. That is all. You’re welcome.”
Denver, you probably already know Fo Chief. Or maybe you know his crew, Fresh Breath Committee. Best known as a member of the FBC collective, Fo Chief has been putting it down for years but just recently started getting into solo projects as well. Just recently he dropped the Airbag Jones EP and tomorrow he drops his official solo debut album, Out The Deep End, just in time to perform some of the new songs at this month’s Solution Showcase #11, so we’re gonna focus on that. Based on “Chapters 12″, the song he just sent us to leak, the album’s gonna be one of the better CO hip hop releases of the year. Take a quick listen to it below or right/control click to download it.
Now that you’ve had a taste, here’s more info about Fo Chief’s upcoming debut album, Out The Deep End:
Out The Deep End is the debut solo album from Fo Chief of Fresh Breath Committee and produced by Majestic Beats of Providence, Rhode Island. This lyrically impressive album has something for every music palette. Fo Chief shows that he can not only rhyme with the best of them, but can also nail the notes in each and every chorus on the album. The beats and production quality are outstanding. Majestic’s production skills match the soulful, darker overall vibe of the album seamlessly. This album is proof that it pays to cross state lines and engage with some of the best national talent. Out The Deep End comes on the heels of Chief’s mix tape “AirBag Jones – A Quick Fixtape.” Other previous projects include the Colorado classic mixtape “Cannonball Soup” with Kontrast of the Fresh Breath Committee, “Nothing Else Matters” with ProCYSE of Soulfficial and recent 2011 FBC release “Group Therapy”. Out The Deep End is the first Colorado collaboration project for both Fo Chief and Majestic Beats. Majestic Beats has produced for some of Rhode Island’s finest emcees including Swann Notty, Miles Grimes, Writes, & Shay Witty, not to mention production on the award winning track “Letras” from Portuguese rap legend Sandro G, which continues to break records in the Azores & Portugal. Although as an entity the Fresh Breath Committee has produced amazing content, it’s always very refreshing to see a group artist step away from the pack and shine on their own. This album also proves that Fo Chief has the support of his committee behind him, as each member of the group appears in several of the album’s tracks. The album also features several non committee and former committee artists as well, such as ChampSoundKillaBlack of Foodchain, Kerz One of Sound Pictures, Sloe Sip and Myke Charles. 2012 has proved to be a prolific year for Fo Chief and 2013 should be even better. Look for a video set to be released early 2013 with production by Press Media Group and a second solo album from Fo Chief as well. Rumor has it that Cannonball Soup II is in the works. We can only hope. Out The Deep End will be released for free download on Friday, December 21st at www.fochief.bandcamp.com. Catch Fo Chief performing live at The Solution Saturday, December 21st. For more information, visit www.denversolution.com. All Fo Chief and Fresh Breath Committee projects are available on www.freshbreathcommittee.bandcamp.com. Majestic beats music is available at www.soundcloud.com/majestic-beats.
SATURDAY, 12/22 -> After featuring “Hov’s fav cat”/Questlove protege Danny! at last month’s Solution Showcase, we’re back at it with another ridiculously talented new artist who’s been racking up praise from legends and an extra thick lineup to celebrate the showcase’s one year anniversary (thanks for helping us make it happen Denver!!!). This month’s Solution Showcase #11 features Atlanta-based Q-Tip/No I.D. protegeSpree Wilson, CO production legendBoonie Mayfield, Fresh Breath Committee’s Fo Chief, eclectic producer/DJ Neon Brown and all three Solution DJs; DJ Low Key, Sounds Supreme & Lazy Eyez. Otherwise, it’s only an $8 cover to catch 7 top notch acts at an award-winning venue. 2701 Larimer St / 21+ / Doors at 9pm.
Denver, meet ATLien Spree Wilson. We first heard of Spree a few years back when he dropped “Word!” with one of his mentors No I.D. (video below) because well, we’ll check out anything No I.D. produces based on his work with Common, Jay-Z and such, not to mention the mentoring of his most infamous protege, Kanye West. It took me a minute to get used to Spree’s voice and No I.D.’s strangely electronic beat but it grew on me, just as I was hearing other work of his pop up on albums/mixtapes with Novel and DJ Deckstream and realizing the full on scope of dude’s talent. From there we heard a few more solo joints, “Pick You Apart” and some leaks from his critically acclaimedThe Never Ending Now project which became staples in DJ sets at The Solution and while Low Key DJed at Guess.
Above: “Right One, Wrong Time”, one of our 2012 favorites. /// Below: Very dope video for Spree Wilson feat Novel “King Sh*t (The Answer)”.
Next thing I know I’m seeing Q-Tip shouting out Spree Wilson left and right, mentioning they’re working together some and talk of Spree linking up with the likes of Outkast producers extraordinaires Organized Noise and The Flush, as well as G.O.O.D. music. Spree did in fact link up with Kanye and crew, with writing credits on the Cruel Summer album plus six more yet to be released songs (!!!!!), as well as getting some work on the upcoming Cee-Lo and Theophilus London projects. Then just a few weeks back, Spree dropped the ATL-bass inspired super JAM, “Right One, Wrong Time”, that we can’t stop playing, making now a great time to have him out for The Solution Showcase.
